Standing Against Lawlessness

Elections in Crisis:

Regardless of what’s been proven about the integrity of the 2020 election, we are certainly experiencing a crisis of confidence in our electoral system in America. A 2022 poll reported by Newsweek Magazine[i] showed that “only 20% of the public says it’s very confident in the country’s elections.” Despite this, no major actions have been taken to restore our trust in this sacred and essential institution. In 2016, we launched the massive Mueller investigation to investigate suspected Trump collusion with Russian election interference. Yet to date, we have not seen any move to assuage the concerns troubling millions of Americans about election integrity. I believe the cause for this blindness is spiritual. There is a demonic stronghold hiding the evidence and blinding people’s eyes to the truth. Our own national sins have opened the door to this intrusion. The roots of this spiritual iniquity run deep in our nation’s history, starting over 100 years ago in 1893 when the U.S. led the overthrow of the sovereign Nation of Hawaii, followed by a string of interventions, coups, and compromised elections across the globe.

Our Shameful History:

American missionaries first came to Hawaii in 1820, but profiteers soon followed. By the 1890s, the financial interests of American sugar and pineapple growers were squeezing out native Hawaiians. When their rightful monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, wanted to restrain their growing power, these newly wealthy land barons convinced President Grover Cleveland allow them to use U.S. Marines to depose Hawaii’s legitimate ruler. This was the first time that U.S. troops were used in a coup of a foreign government, but it would not be the last. This began an era of hegemony and election interference that has persisted into the modern day.

Many of the early foreign interventions, especially in the Americas, were coups toppling existing governments. The ousting of President Zelaya of Nicaragua in 1910 was the first coup executed directly by our government. However, direct military interventions, like those in Cuba and the Philippines, began to get costly, both politically and economically. In the latter 20th century, the US turned to manipulating elections as the favored approach across Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. In his excellent book, Meddling in the Ballot Box, Dr. Dov H. Levin reveals that the U.S. has meddled in the elections of foreign countries over 80 times in the 20th century following WWII, establishing America as the global leader in election interference.

While Americans love to think of our nation as the global protector of democracy, our regrettable history as an imperialist power tells a different story. In Latin America, where we instituted repressive regimes that came to be known as “banana republics,” we have crushed innocent lives to satisfy our own greed and national interests. We have wreaked havoc in countries like Nicaragua, Guatemala, and even Mexico. The social and economic toll has been tragic. Over a hundred years later, Congress and President Clinton finally offered an apology to Hawaii, our 50th state, but for many other nations, the crimes have been ignored. The powers of hell are delighted to have such a grand partner as the United States to participate in their brutal, repressive agenda.

What happens to a nation that partners with evil spirits? In the Old Testament, when the Israelites turned to worship demonic gods they were afflicted by those same demons. In recent history, we can see that the rise in abortions after the passage of Roe v. Wade ushered in an unprecedented increase in school shootings and violence. We partnered with a spirit of death and have suffered accordingly. This illustrates Galatians 6:7, which reads, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” In partnering with spirits of lawlessness and hegemony to overturn elections in other countries, we have allowed those same spirits free access to corrupt our elections as well.

We Are the Answer:

There is good news. The church is uniquely positioned to bring lasting change. In Matthew 16:18, when Christ declared that we would prevail against the gates of hell, the Greek term translated “church” is “ecclesia.” This was a governmental term applied to groups of citizens called out to mediate important decisions of the day. Its use indicates that the Church is to be involved in the important governmental issues of the day and is God’s primary instrument in bringing His kingdom to earth. We can clearly see from the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 (“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”) as well as in the Great Commission in Matthew 28 and Mark 16. We also know from 2 Chronicles 7:14, that His focus is on God’s people who are “called by His name”. He says that if we humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, then He will forgive our sins and heal our land.

Confess, Repent and Pray:

We have three great examples in the Old Testament of how to lead a nation in repentance and humility. Though blameless in conduct, both Daniel (Daniel 9:4-19) and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:6) confessed the sins of the people as if they were their own sins. Daniel’s confessions ushered in the great “seventy weeks” revelation of the Jews’ destiny into the end of the age, and Nehemiah’s humility allowed the city wall to be rebuilt in only fifty-two days. Esther, a lovely yet lowly Jewish girl in Babylon, was sex trafficked into the king’s palace. When hearing that her people were to be annihilated, she fasted and prayed for three days and then risked her life to plead with the king for their safety. We may not be facing annihilation, but our democratic republic cannot survive without fair elections. The world needs America to stay free. Can we not have the humility of a Daniel or vision of a Nehemiah and the courage of an Esther in this challenging time?

Restoring Freedom:

To restore free and fair elections in this country we need to be delivered from the demonic influence of lawlessness and hegemony. The ecclesia in America needs to confess our national sins of greed and election meddling. Our covenant with these evil spirits has clouded our national conscience regarding elections. We are God’s called-out ones, commissioned to disciple America in righteousness and justice, the foundations of His throne (see Psalm 89:14). He has given us His message, and we are uniquely positioned to lead the nation in the repentance necessary to break our covenant with the demonic spirits ruling over our elections. The time is urgent, but the Lord is swift to answer. We are a faithful remnant, called for such a time as this. We must spread this message to all believers and restore fair and free elections to this land. I urge you to pray into this vision and share it with your friends, pastors, and prayer groups. Bearing this truth, I am confident that we can restore secure elections for this November and for the rest of our nation’s history.
